Detail: At our martial arts Dojo in Midland, karate classes for adults and kid’s karate classes teach self defense, self-discipline and self-esteem, while always reinforcing respect for others. As an accredited martial arts academy and karate school, we believe it is our responsibility to teach the principles of character development in equal proportion to the martial art of karate and the Kobudo skills we teach. It is our belief that karate fosters strong mental discipline, a better self-image and stronger community citizenship by addressing the motivational character of every student. Budokan Karate teaches Okinawan martial arts in a structured learning environment, which is designed to produce steady improvement while fostering a culture of honor. Although discipline is important, we also believe in encouragement and positive reinforcement. This Karate school began as a program which Ragnar Avery (Sensei Rags) founded and began operating more than 18 years ago. Sensei Avery has trained in the martial arts for 29 years, and is a Sixth Degree Black Belt in the worldwide Yamashita International organization. He runs the adult and children's classes and is the overall instructor of our various programs. Budokan Karate is officially recognized by Yamashita International as a long standing member. During the long and storied history of Okinawa, the rare and ancient practice of Kobudo or "karate weapons" developed into a beautiful art form. This elegant methodology has an important place in our dojo, although its practice is limited to certain ranks of seniority. Flexibility is integral to our training style. Our karate instructors develop training schedules and goals with each student according to their individual ability, age, and rate of progress. Our evaluation program is structured to include testing dates which are scheduled at regularly posted, eight week intervals. Our goal oriented teaching method insures that each student knows exactly which goals they need to accomplish in order to advance. Karate is serious business; however, we’ve also discovered the importance of infusing seriousness with the important element of fun.
