Detail: The Vigo County Youth Soccer Association exists because a large number of us share common goals for our children. We want them to have an opportunity to play competitive soccer and have fun (a goal they emphatically share with all of us), but we also want their experiences in soccer to help them grow as people toward being adults we can be proud of. That means we probably agree, at least in principle, on a few other, more immediate goals. We probably believe they should have the chance to experience some successes, play a lot, experience some challenges that push them a bit, and be around adults who model some of the character traits we want them to learn, like composure in times of adversity, adaptability, respect for others whatever their role, competitiveness, self-assurance, humility, and so on. If you ask the kids what they want, as numerous national surveys have done, they list having fun first, followed by goals such as meeting new friends and learning new skills.
