Detail: L.P. Brown, named after Leland P. Brown, former Olympia teacher, principal and twenty-six year Superintendent of Olympia Schools, is located in the northwest corner of Olympia. It serves approximately 300 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. In addition, special needs children are served in the building's autism program, and the Infant Toddler Programs. The school was originally built in 1965. In 1968, additions were made to the school, which included the library and a six-classroom wing expansion. In 1978, the multipurpose building was expanded, increasing the size of the gymnasium. In 1986, a covered playshed structure was constructed. Separate areas for the bus and parent drop-off, a set of new student lavatories and fire sprinklers for the main building were completed in September 1997. The addition of six classrooms in a new wing and a remodeled music room was finished in January 1998, giving L.P. Brown a total of 18 classrooms.
