Martial arts have been around for thousands of years and originated from the Asian cultures. The Chinese have always worshiped animals for many different reasons. They found animals to have qualities that they too wished to have. They found ways to incorporate those traits in their everyday actions. They took what they felt were the best qualities from animals and used them, worshiped them, aspired to them. When the Chinese people were threatened they needed to find a way to defend themselves. They developed movements that were deliberate, precise and strong. And so began the birth of the Martial Arts. A lot of the moves that were developed were created after studying the animals. Animals like the Tiger, Panther, Crane, Snake, Eagle, Monkey, Bear and the Dragon. Our system derives our movements from all of these animals so why the dragon and tiger? The Tiger is an intelligent and very powerful animal, it has no fear. It moves straight down the middle attacking the most vulnerable and vital parts, preferring to meet force with more force. The Tiger techniques move in a straight line while throwing devastating blows to the face and groin. The Tiger techniques keep the weight off the front leg so as to leap with the back leg lunging in like a Tiger. In essence it is the strategy of moving straight in that distinguishes the Tiger. In the Chinese culture the Dragons are the ultimate symbol of cosmic energy (Chi). It is considered to be wise and also powerful. However the Dragon is primarily defensive animal. Its strategy is to move out of the way. When an attack is impending the Dragons strategy would be a judicious use of critical distance. The dragon would then offer an apparent target, then would direct or re-direct the force of the attack in a different or exaggerated direction. In essence it is the strategy of diverting an opponents energy that distinguishes the Dragon. The Dragon and the Tiger are probably the most revered animals in the martial arts world. In the Chinese culture it is believed that these two great animals while both being so powerful have opposing forces, reflecting the Yin and the Yang balance. The Dragon combined with the tiger are balanced and can’t be beat.
