The word Karate, at one time, back in the 1960’s was a generic term for unusual fighting skills. Prior to the introduction of what was known as Karate at the time, there was boxing, wrestling and Judo. But if you were kicking and punching with the karate style stances, you were doing karate. Eventually, other methods of similar skills came along. They looked just like the karate format, but for various reasons the practitioners called their methods something else, like Tae Kwon Do or Tang SooDo, etc. The methods were generally just derivatives of what was known as karate, but with a different name. The Neves Karate Academy has, as it’s foundation, the idea of self-knowledge as it’s key ingredient. The perspective is that there is no specific or exact technique that is key to one’s success. Rather, it is in the idea of knowing your ability and thus your opponents lack thereof (ie their weaknesses), which is the key to overcoming massive power thru softness. This softness is taught with very rigorous training and will challenge most everyone’s character. The karate at the Neves Karate Academy has the methods of circular movement as it’s foundation. As martial arts evolve today in the 21st century, many practitioners believe that this or that method is superior to the methods of the past, but nothing could be further from the truth. The skills that are intended to teach the practitioner something about self-nature in mind-fighting skill harmony (some people refer to it as mind/body harmony) is long-lasting and effective. That’s what’s taught at the Academy.
