Tae Kwon Do, Taekwondo or Taekwon-Do is the Korean national sport and most commonly practiced form of mudo. It is also one of the world's most commonly practiced sports. In the Korean language, Tae means "to kick or destroy with the foot", kwon means "punch or smash with the hand or fist", and Do means "way or art". Hence, Taekwon-Do is taken to mean "The art of hand and footâ€. TaeKwon-Do is not a competitive sport, but rather is an art, which ultimately becomes a way of life for its practitioners. Adults and children, young and old, both can benefit from TaeKwon-Do. TaeKwon-Do trains the mind and body as well as builds up your physical fitness. There are many benefits of Taekwon-Do which include stress reduction, self-confidence, promotes respect, enhances your coordination, power, speed, flexibility and endurance. Students are ultimately taught that strength is in being able to resolve conflict without violence. It takes more internal strength to walk away thus TaeKwon-Do does not make students violent. The exercises in TaeKwon-Do release energy in students in a positive manner. Students learn discipline and are required to follow the protocols of courtesy and the rules of conduct in the school. Students learn to respect and define the Tenets of TaeKwon-Do: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit.
