Details:
Starting the Dragon Dojo with only 100 dollars in my checking account was very difficult. I was lucky enough to find an aerobics room at a neighborhood gym to teach classes. The Karate school that I was instructor at had collapsed and students called me to see if I was going to continue teaching. After three months of research and struggle I opened The Dragon Dojo in the year of the Dragon, 2000. At first I only had a cardboard box file for attendance cards, one slap target and one airshield. I didn't even have a uniform. But, I did have a well deserved Black Belt ready and eager to continue the Martial Arts. I developed the curriculum with an emphasis on basics in which one instructor could teach. And, seven years later The Dragon Dojo has grown strong with a new location and more training equipment. I teach a condensed version of Kenpo techniques and hatas with Okinawaan weapons, nunchaku, escrima and staff. I've been influenced by the basics of Shotokan and implement the five ways to create power in the katas and techniques. Having an Art degree, I encourage advanced students to use their creative energies to make up their own katas and techniques, a "void" mentality. I also award Black Belt students with Years of Black Belt instead of Degrees. This program is very successful and easy to keep track of progression of Black Belt Students. I am practicing Ninjutsu with a friend of mine that has a very strong Shotokan background at a Bujinkan Ninjutsu Dojo in Colorado Springs. This elemental style of combat has greatly influenced my teachings to adult and Black Belt Students. My son and I have created a new weapons style specifically designed for competition. We do the Double Jo's. We broke down the movements into basics and started competing with them and have had tremendous progress and success with them. My son, a sixth year Black Belt, Carlos, agile and young, has discovered the Martial Arts Tricks movement and is fantastic at it. He loves competition and is pursuing national and international competitions. For now, our grappling, kickboxing and capoeria programs are still in the beginning stages and I hope to see continued growth in those disciplines. Sensei Phil Salazar, 10th Year Black Belt
