We turn "I can't" into "Hey, I did it!" We believe Taekwon-Do is the ultimate form of cross-training. Cross-training is effective because the athlete conditions all parts of their body. Since the exercise routine is different at every workout, boredom does not become an issue. Taekwon-Do also strengthens a part of the body that few other forms of exercise can reach. This art form also strengthens the mind. Sparring is a tactical, strategy intensive activity that engages the mind at a level beyond most other activities. Patterns are beautiful almost dance like routines that push the body and mind to achieve new feats and grow stronger with each attained rank. Almost every aspect of each workout challenges the mind as well as the body. During a 45 minute Taekwon-Do workout, a 180 pound man will burn 613 calories. This is exactly the same amount burned during a 45 minute run at a 10 min/mile pace. The Taekwon-Do athlete will strengthen every part of his body during those 45 minutes while the runner's conditioning is limited. A typical class consists of warm-up exercises, conditioning, kicking and punching drills, sparring, self-defense drills, pattern routines (there are a total of 24 patterns that a Taekwon-Do student will eventually memorize), and stretching. All classes are taught by Mr. DeSousa (Chief Instructor-5th Dan Black Belt) and we always have at least one black belt assistant teacher (who has gone through instructor training) in every class. Adult classes usually include a number of black belts who can assist as needed. Northwest Taekwon-Do is a member of the American Martial Arts Alliance (AMA). This association provides additional training opportunities for adults, children, and special women's programs. They also sanction numerous tournaments throughout the year, and provide continuing education for our senior instructors.
