Details:
Our founder, Sensei Sachio Matsubara, started teaching at the USO in Oceanside, California in 1954. He had already been teaching judo in California for many years prior to that time. In 1958, San Shi Judo Club moved to its present location at the Japanese American Cultural Center in Vista, California. In 2008, San Shi Judo celebrated our 50th Anniversary. Sensei Matsubara’s son, Sensei Ernie Matsubara, carries on the family tradition teaching Judo to a new generation of San Diego judoka. He is joined by another second generation instructor, Sensei Bobby Nakano Jr., along with Sensei Bill Caldwell, Sensei Mark Yamanaka M.D., Sensei Elliot Harvey, Sensei Fred Nuthall and other talented black belts who generously share their time and knowledge with our club members. San Shi Judo Club teaches Kodakan Judo and offers classes for adults, teens, and children. Our dojo strives to teach not only the physical side of the “gentle art,†but also endeavors to impart the spiritual aspects of judo as taught by Jigoro Kano the founder of modern judo. He felt that the ultimate object of judo was to perfect oneself and thus be of some use to the world.
