In my years of training and teaching martial arts, I have encountered people who train in the martial arts for many different reasons, and that is because there are many benefits to martial arts training. Personal development is probably the martial arts' strongest suit. Self-control, self-discipline, goal achievement, and mental focus are character traits and skills that run deep in martial arts instruction. This is one reason for their popularity among children and young adults. Training in the martial arts also cultivates the health and wellbeing of the student. Given the sedentary nature of most of our jobs and the shift away from physical education in schools, recreational exercise is all the more important these days. Keeping exercise fun, fresh, and mentally stimulating can be instrumental in maintaining a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. I know I would rather be kicking a heavy bag or performing a poomse (i.e. kata or form) than running on a treadmill. The martial arts have a reputation for imparting the skills and confidence to fight back against assault, and for good reason. Self defense is a thoroughly complex subject and requires consideration of legal and psychological issues in addition to physical skill and technique. But martial arts training can be an important piece in a greater strategy for keeping yourself safe. While there are more benefits to martial arts training than four, I will end with the enjoyment of sporting competition. Some students like to participate in local tournaments while others just enjoy sparring with their classmates. Either way, they get the thrill of competitive sport that people love about baseball, football, soccer, etc.
