Okinawa, the largest island of the Ryukyu Island chain, is quite far from the rest of Japan. For many centuries, the Okinawans traded predominantly with the Chinese. Okinawan culture, as a result, was greatly influenced by the Chinese. In fact, Okinawa was not even part of Japan until the Japanese invaded and occupied the country and subjugated the people. The literal translation of the word “Goju†is “hard (go) soft (ju)â€. The word “Ryu†means “styleâ€. The principals of the art of Goju-Ryu can be described as the development of the body, through intense training, to “turn on†in an instant in order to become armored to protect against any attack, then, just as quickly, to “turn off†the power and become supple enough to counter-attack with lightning quickness. A more spiritual interpretation of the hard-soft philosophy would be the strength to withstand life’s stresses and challenges while remaining compassionate and warm-hearted in our contact toward others. The philosophy of the balance of the hard and soft, as well as other seemingly opposite ideas, is integral, but not unique to Goju. For centuries, the Chinese have understood the balance of opposites - of Yin/Yang - of a universe balanced by opposing forces blending into each other, with a little of each represented in the heart of the other. It is clear these concepts found their way into Okinawan culture. Our School We are a traditional karate school, not a “belt factoryâ€. All promotions are earned, and each student progresses at his/her own pace. We specialize in Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-Do, and we don’t claim to teach the “martial art of the momentâ€. Students are welcome to attend as many or as few classes as their schedule permits. Our main goal is to build skills, coordination, and self esteem. Our constant focus is “Courtesy, Respect, and Good Mannersâ€. We require no contracts, but offer discounts for students who are ready to make a commitment to themselves. We also offer discounted tuition for additional family members. We’re here to make a commitment to YOU! The art of Goju Ryu karate can be practiced by virtually anyone. It takes little physical space, and requires no equipment. In our dojo, each student advances at his or her own pace; ours is not a competitive activity. We do not practice free fighting (sparring). All of our fighting sequences are pre-arranged, making our training amongst the safest of all martial arts, while still building strength, speed, and technique. We do not water down the training, and we do not award rank in any set timeline. We stress that “perfection is not the goal, the main goal is improvementâ€. If one states that they have “mastered†any style of karate, then they have missed an integral part of the philosophy of the martial artist. There is always more to learn. Even someone who practices karate for their entire life can continue to improve skills, and discover hidden meanings and applications in each technique. The only limit to a martial artist’s growth is their own attitude and dedication (or lack thereof) to their training. Each student is an individual. Each student has his/her unique talents and strengths. Each student has his/her unique needs or weaknesses. Our school is small, and each student receives individual or small group instruction with attention to each person’s unique personality. We believe this makes our dojo special, a hidden gem.
