Note:
Since I left the Jaribu system I have tried a few different Dojos and different styles. I look back on the style of training I received there and the discipline as unique and in some ways invaluable. The training was hard grueling and it gave me some idea
Details:
The Jaribu System was created and founded by Kyoshi Ronald Austin, in 1962, after many years of devoted observance and study. The techniques that comprise the System were developed after having studied the techniques of both the ancient and contemporary marital arts systems. Kyoshi Austin felt that it was necessary for an American to devise constant, ever-moving techniques that represent the essence of American life. The Jaribu System teaches total evasion of the opposition. It is based on the continuity of the circle. That is to say, the continuity of circular patterns, as opposed to the accepted so-called straight line. This simply means having the ability to change direction quickly and smoothly, as can only be effected when using circular movements. If the first movement were a straight lined attack, the body would first have to stop for an instant to change its direction; whereas, if the first movement were circular it would not be necessary to break the fluidity of movement. This System has absorbed the most reliable techniques from the martial arts of Africa, China, Korea and Japan (American boxing, Caporei, Jujitsu, Chinese Go-Ju and Akijitsu). Jaribu has come to mean the "TEST". It incorporates mental, physical as well as spiritual training - in that order - . The student is to become truly aware of ones own development. The mental goal is to help ones self be disciplined so that you may effect your own environment in a constructive way. The physical goal is to take in the muscular exercise of the whole body, and ultimately provide the highest possible coordination for each individual student according to their own ability, or kinetic sense. The spiritual goal is to be at peace with ones self, encompassing the realm of life. The student is to be attuned to everything that is seen, as well as that which is not seen. The people in Jaribu will be confident that within their own circle, peace shall prevail.
