On September 11th, 2002, I walked through the doors of the West Milford Academy of Koei-Kan Karate-Do. I was a 15 year old kid just looking for a little extra exercise on my off season and self defense. But little did I know that I was going to completely fall in love with karate. I fell in love with the discipline, ranks, structure, and the confidence it gave me. Very quickly I was known as the "dojo kid" (I lived, ate & almost slept at the dojo). Through the years and ranks, I gave back to the dojo with my interest and talents in art. I was always very good with websites and Adobe Photoshop, so created a long over due website for the dojo. I also created a design for t-shirts, so that I could sell and save up money for a new floor for the dojo. It only took two years but I can proudly say it was worth the wait. Giving back to the dojo was the least I could do for all that was given to me through the years. Now at the age of 25, a 2nd degree black belt, and a Future Sailor/Airman of the United States Navy. Joining the Navy is something I have always wanted to do. I'm a person who likes to go out and get it, not sit around waiting for it to come to me. My grandfathers and uncles served in the military, and I have always considered it in my blood. It always made me so proud to listen to their war stories, and made me want to serve my country. I look back at all that I have accomplished, and I thank karate everyday for it. Karate kept me out of trouble in my teen years, and taught me to better myself. It has given me more than just confidence and knowledge of self defense. Karate has given me a family, job opportunities, and skills that can be used in everyday life. I thank all my Sensei for always being there for me, and helping me through the years. I never would have accomplished what I did with out their love and support. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Words cannot describe how much I am going to miss my karate family.
