Details:
Always a dedicated athlete, Master James Marr competed in track and field, swimming, wrestling, football, and bicycling before discovering Taekwon-do in college. The combined physical and mental discipline of this modern martial art appealed to him, and soon this hobby became a passion. After earning an undergraduate degree in psychology and a masters degree in technical theatre, Marr moved to New York City to pursue a theatre career. Researching the numerous Taekwon-do schools in Manhattan, Marr found Grandmaster Suk Jun Kim, a direct disciple of Taekwon-do’s founder, General Choi Hong Hi. Grandmaster Kim had been chosen by General Choi to be an original member of the International Taekwondo Federation’s Demonstration Team in the 1970s. Under Grandmaster Kim’s tutelage, Marr learned not only how to practice his art, but how to teach it most effectively. After reaching the rank of 3rd Dan (3rd degree Black Belt), Marr decided, with encouragement from the Grandmaster, to open his own school. In 2002, Glen Ridge Taekwon-do opened in Glen Ridge, NJ, where Marr lives with his wife and two children. His wife, now a 4th degree Black Belt, assists with teaching and many other aspects of developing a Taekwon-do school. Only four years later, Glen Ridge Taekwon-do had outgrown its space, and in January 2006, took up residence in Montclair, NJ, coincidentally on Glen Ridge Avenue. With more than twice the space, Glen Ridge Taekwon-do now boasts two large training areas with lots of natural light, roomy dressing rooms with showers, a watching area for parents, and a separate reception room. Unlike a gym or a health spa, Glen Ridge Taekwon-do is not run like the usual business. Master Marr considers his school to be a place of learning, and his method of teaching emphasizes the traditional values of discipline, practice, hard work and focus. He teaches all classes himself for continuity and accuracy. Promotions are based on each student’s progress and not on an arbitrary timeline. His goal is to help each student reach his or her full potential and therefore, he expects his students to learn and practice with diligence and sincerity. Although Glen Ridge Taekwon-do is independently owned and operated by Marr, it maintains a close association with S. J. Kim’s Taekwon-do in Manhattan and is a charter member of Taekwondo International. Since opening Glen Ridge Taekwon-do, Marr has earned the rank of 6th Dan. He maintains his training under Grandmaster Kim with the goal of continually improving his mind and body.
