Detail: I was born in 1970 and raised by my father and mother in a small town named Cass City which is located in the thumb of Michigan two hours north of Detroit. Like all boys, I had a desire to learn a martial art but, at that time there was no opportunity for me to do so. Instead, I spent a lot of time on the football field and wrestling mat. After graduating from high school there were no contact sports and very little work available, so I felt like I needed to make a move. It was then that I relocated to northern Indiana. While at work one day I talked to a co-worker about my desire to learn martial arts. He proceeded to tell me about a master of a martial art I had never heard of called Jiu-Jitsu. This master was reportedly “the real deal!†He told me stories about a “large athletic man with blinding speed that could strike you in multiple vital areas in a single flurry before you had time to flinch.†I liked the sounds of that so I gave it a try. To my amazement and delight, everything I was told was not only true, but understated! Shihan Randy Harvell was 38 years old at the time. With all my years of study, I can say with confidence, that he was one of the most deadly men alive at the time. He is the most kind and generous man I have ever met and doesn’t have an arrogant bone in his body. I am proud to call him my friend and mentor. Sensei Randy Johnson The style I learned from Professor Harvell is the most complete, well rounded, reel world effective styles in the world. It is based on combat, not sport, which really appealed to me and still does. Once you begin to study Combat Jiu-Jitsu, you will never finish. You could study for a hundred years and still learn or discover something new every day. It’s a journey with no end, so enjoy the ride and don’t focus on the arrival or completion. I obtained my black belt in 18 months, which at that time was a record for the fastest anyone in the federation had earned their degree. I mention this not to brag or challenge but to give you an idea of how long it takes. I accomplished this in the time mentioned because I was new in the state with very few aquatints. I made my friends in the dojo and practiced 6 or 7 days a week. After getting my black belt I taught at the Masters dojo for about three years before opening a dojo of my own. I still teach in my dojo or workout with the Master 4 to 6 times a week. I find the more I learn about combat, the better I understand how much more there is to learn! There is an old Japanese saying that goes as follows - “Never be afraid to teach someone everything you know because it will only make you better.†That is something I have always believed in. My goal is to share everything I have learned about martial arts over the last 20 years in a well organized, fun and easy to understand format with as many people as I can. I want my students to benefit from my teaching as much as i benefited from my masters.
