In Korean, tae means “footâ€; kwon means “fistâ€; and do means “way†or “martial artâ€. That makes the loose translation for Tae Kwon Do as “the way of the foot and fist,†but some translate it as, “the art of kicking and punching.†Tae Kwon Do’s popularity has resulted in the varied evolution of the martial art into several domains as with many other arts, it combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, meditation and philosophy. Tae Kwon Do as a martial art is popular with people of both genders and of many ages Tae Kwon Do training generally includes a system of blocks, kicks, punches and openhanded strikes and may also include various take-downs, throws and joint locks. Physically, Tae Kwon Do develops strength, speed, balance, flexibility and stamina. An example of the union of mental and physical discipline is the breaking of boards which requires both physical mastery of the technique and the concentration to focus ones’ strength.
