Detail: Kyoshi Jeff Bateman is a 8th Degree Black Belt (Hachidan) in Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Karate and a 7th Degree Black Belt (Nanadan) in Zen Okinawan Kobudo. He began his training in August of 1980, but suffered a broken leg in November. Since he was unable to run, he began his weapons training in order to defend himself. The first system of Karate and Kobudo that he learned was under Grand Master Shugoro Nakazato called Shorin-Ryu Shorin-Kan. He received his Black Belt in 1985 at a summer camp at Buckroe Beach in Hampton, Virginia, from Grand Master Nakazato. Through this system, he attained the rank of 4th Dan and then became affiliated with Master Tadashi Yamashita in 1988.
