Detail: I have been asked often just what is it that we teach, is it Kung Fu, is it Karate? The simple truth is that it is both and neither, it is not purely one style or another due to the many different influences I have had throughout the years. I call my particular style of Martial arts "KenJitsu Ryu Karate". This refers to the most prevalent aspects of what I teach. The "Ken" is for Kenpo and it is the heart of my system which consists of hard blocks, fast hand strikes, leg sweeps and low smashing kicks as opposed to high and often telegraphed ones used by "Sport" type schools. At White Tiger we don't kick people in the head for the same reason we don't punch them in the feet, it's just not practical. The "Jitsu" is for the many locks, breaks, traps and joint restraints that are used along with my Kenpo hands. This is a very practical from of self defense when used in conjunction with the powerful striking of Kenpo. "Ryu" means the way, or in this case my way of doing things. "Karate" means (empty hand) and refers to the the ability to defend oneself without the need of a weapon. When combined these main elements add up to a realistic, effective system of self defense. Along with the main elements of "KenJitsu Ryu" we teach traditional kata and Okinawan weaponry. There are also Boxing influences as well as Judo, plus a healthy dose of modern day weapons training (gun, knife, club) that comes from my experiences as a night club bouncer and in the security field. This is also where many of my new self defense techniques were developed and found to be effective in real world self defense applications. Reality and has to be the core focus in any good Martial Arts school, otherwise you're just dancing around in a Karate uniform. As I tell my students, "you can't learn to swim without getting wet," and you can't learn to defend yourself without making some contact. Safety is always a great concern at White Tiger Martial Arts. The students ability to deliver an accurate and controlled strike are crucial to learning how to judge speed, power, timing and distance. Without these components it is impossible to defend yourself. Remember that the term "Martial" refers to the Military or fighting arts, not the "sport" type competition for trophy arts. A Samurai would have no use for a trophy and there are no second place awards given out in a violent attack. At White Tiger Martial Arts our young students are taught how to focus and about the values of respect, discipline and hard work. They are taught that their best weapon is their mind and that the more they learn to use it the less likely they will need to use their karate skills. I love children, I take great pride in being a mentor and a role model for them. After over twenty years of teaching, I am still amazed by their ability to learn and capacity for retention. You can teach a child anything as long as you're patient, caring and can look at the world through their young eyes. Far too often Karate schools either treat children like small adults or they baby sit them in Karate clothes. I say teach them according to their developmental level. A four year old is too young to grasp the concepts and realities of much of the world around them and should never be taught anything remotely violent. At White Tiger Martial Arts we emphasize the basics with our children. They learn that blocking is one of the most important things they can learn. I teach them that If they can block well, they can't be hit. If they can't be hit, they can't be hurt. Children should not be put on any training program that is designed for adults. Children should instead be taught on a Jr. or "half curriculum" and should not be allowed to hold Full Black Belt Ranks until at least age 16. The result of this is a student who has patience, dedication, loyalty and is not just a training for the next colored belt in the rainbow. The focus should always be on learning and not on Karate belts. Even my own son who has trained since age four was awarded a Jr. Black Belt due to his young age after a decade of training. What do I teach my adults? I teach them to move hard, fast and with bad intent when necessary. I tell them that if they do have to use their "KenJitsu" training they should only do so because there are no options left to them such as reasoning with the other person or even just walking away from a potentially bad situation. At this point the time for talking is over. I tell them that if they do no more than what is necessary to end an attack they have shown self control, compassion and have no need for regret. I personally like to think that a clear mind makes a comfortable pillow. Do I like to fight? No, I do not but I do not fear it either, in the jungle that we call "modern society" there is no room for fear. Like all people, I am a product of my environment and a creature of the earth. I'm also a realist and a reflection of the many teachers I have had the good fortune to learn from over the years. I hope when they think of me I make them proud in some small way and that the ones who have passed on will watch over me from wherever they may be. So it is out of my various Martial Arts influences and life experiences that 'KenJitsu Ryu Karate" was born. This is what I teach. Hanshi Thomas P. Hetu Master Instructor: Founder.
