Detail: The Golden Dragon was founded by Sensei (Instructor) Lanny Reed at the Williamsport YMCA in 1970 (1970-1988). After starting his Judo career in the United States Air Force, became Alaska State Judo Champion, competed in and placed at the US Air Force World Wide Judo Championships, he returned to the Williamsport area. In 1973 he started the Pa. State Judo Championships. He retired from the Williamsport Police Department and the Lycoming County District Attorney’s office as a Criminal Investigator and is still a nationally certified Law Enforcement Instructor (over 30 years). Reed has trained in several styles of karate and holds Internationally recognized Black Belts in Hakko Ryu Ju Jitsu, Dan Zan Ryu Ju Jitsu, a 5th Degree Black Belt in USJA Ju Jitsu and a 5th Degree Black Belt in Judo. He has more than 45 years of Martial Arts teaching experience. Over the years the Golden Dragon has moved around to various locations in Williamsport. We moved from the Williamsport YMCA to the old Jefferson School, to the old City Hotel, to Raytowne, to the second floor of Rodger’s Uniform to our current location at 431 West Third Street, each for a larger and better location for our students to train. We are one of the oldest Judo and Ju Jitsu schools in the state and the oldest Martial Arts studio in our area. We have taught Judo, Ju Jitsu, self defense classes throughout the area including: Williamsport Recreation Commission, local hospitals, Wise Options, mental health agecies, children & Youth Services, STEP, local schools (teachers and students), local businesses & clubs, Girl & Boy Scouts, Realators, local & state police, security officers and many more. We were the first in the area to offer: certified Judo Instruction, Instructors & tournaments, Dan Zan Ryu Ju Jitsu, started the Pa. Judo Championships, certified law enforcement training, ground fighting classes. Our mats are tatami which were used in the 1996 Olympics, a martial arts equipment retail store, first to offer various styles of martial arts at one location, separate children’s classes, women’s classes, Russian Kettlebell training, Ladies Street Survival, Cardio Karate/Kickboxing, and self defense classes. Our students run the gamut from elementary-aged children to senior citizens and persons with physical limitations. We run a variety of classes for persons of all ages. Some students like Ju Jitsu (the arts of gentleness), Ladies Street Survival or just a self defense class. Others like the more aggressive and copetitive techniques and conditioning of Olympic Sport Judo, using throws, grappling arts, armbars and chokes. Judo and Ju Jitsu are the founding arts of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) We now offer an elementary wrestling program called “Dog Pound Wrestling“
