Detail: Physically, Aikido uses natural principles of evasive movement, timing, and redirection of force to resolve violence peacefully. Keeping a calm mind and body, violence is neutralized with very effective techniques which usually cause no injury to the attacker. Philosophically, Aikido recognizes that when faced with a violent attacker, there is an alternative response to responding with violence or pacifism. Instead, Aikido responds calmly and firmly. With the overriding mindset of love and protection of all beings, Aikido surpasses the "eye for an eye" mentality, yet does not allow violence to go unanswered. Training is non-competitive: it is always clear who attacks and who defends, so it never becomes a contest or a "fight". Partners work together learning and refining techniques for optimal effectiveness - yet without injury. Practitioners learn to "receive" the techniques by absorbing them with flexible and responsive movement. They learn how to fall and be thrown without being injured - a valuable skill which results in a strong, supple body and mind. By playing the role of both attacker and defender, practitioners learn very realistically what works and what doesn't.
