Detail: The central mission of Peace on the Street is education. Our mission is to provide an integrated educational program based upon the psychological understandings articulated by the historic Buddha and developed, through the centuries, by his teachers. We provide meditation classes to train the mind. We extend this mental training to the physical through our martial arts program. It is our belief that mental and physical training should be sustained through proper work and economic well-being. To that end we provide career training as part of our integrated program. In essence our mission is to provide a program that integrates mind (meditation), body (martial arts) and spirit (work). Our approach to this mission is non-denominational and community based. Our methodology is based upon core teaching and is not associated with the religious or cultural trappings associated with the various Buddhist churches. While we respect these traditions, we believe that the basic understandings and technologies are available without translating them through Asian cultural forms. The meditation curriculum as well as that of the martial arts is based on urban American experiences and references. We also see no value in religious conversion. The practices that we teach are applicable within the context of the western religions. It is our policy to focus our basic program in such a way that we develop curriculum that is particular to issues of import to the community in which we are located. One of our key concerns is individuals home from prison. We are equally concerned with their families. To that end it is our intention to do active outreach to this population. In particular we look towards developing scholarships to subsidize the program costs for adolescences with incarcerated family members. The integrated character of our meditation / martial arts program is particularly conducive to providing effective anger management workshops. In is also our policy to actively involve ourselves in the community in which we are located. We currently have integrated two of our meditation workshops into the Continuing Education program of City College. These workshops have been published in their Fall catalogue. CUNY has also authorized us to conduct these workshops at our new center on 3rd Ave. We are particularly grateful to the Friends of Zen (www.hollowbones.org) for sponsoring our organization. Currently we are an administrative division of the friends of Zen. We also would like to express our gratitude to the Frederick P. Lenz Foundation for American Buddhism(www.FrederickLenzFoundation.org) whose generous grant underwrote the initial costs of our Center.
