Detail: Hung Ga is famous for being one of the most deadly and ferocious Chinese Kung Fu styles ever created. Its fierce reputation not withstanding, it is also one of the most popular martial art systems in Southern China. Those 5 styles are Hung Ga (洪家), Lau Ga (劉 家), Choi Ga (蔡家), Mok Ga (莫家) and Li Ga (李家). In Chinese the word “Ga” denotes a style from a particular family or clan, so Hung Ga would be the Kung Fu style of the Hung Family. Hung Ga has its origins in the legendary Shaolin Temple of Fukien (Fujian) Province. The Shaolin Temple is the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Because of this Buddhist influence, Hung Ga is much more than just a fighting form; it is truly a martial art form. The fighting monks of the Shaolin Temple based this system on the movements and philosophy of the 5 Animals (Dragon, Snake, Tiger, Leopard and Crane) and the 5 Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Gold and Wood). This resulted in, not only, an extremely effective form self defense, but also, a highly developed method of physical, mental, and spiritual cultivation. Hung Ga has withstood the test of time being forged during an extremely turbulent period in Chinese history wrought with violence and civil war. If a martial art style was not effective in those days, it most often died with its practitioners on the battlefield. Hung Ga did not die, it is still here stronger than ever. Today, many people think that all there is to the Oriental arts of self defense are just the typical blocking, punching and kicking techniques so often seen. Students of traditional Chinese Martial Art – in our case Hung Ga – learn so much more in addition to this. For example, a student will also have to learn acupuncture theory, herbal medicine, dit da seurng faw (treatment of bone and joint injuries), philosophy, mental discipline, qigong (internal energy development), dragon and lion dance as well as the empty hand, grappling, ground fighting and weapons training of the Hung Ga system before he/she is considered qualified to teach.
