Detail: Students at Central Maryland Martial Arts are offered a positive and enriching program of martial study for the purpose of personal development, self-defense and physical fitness. The curriculum centers on the traditional Korean Martial Art of Tang Soo Do. Tang Soo Do as an organized martial art is approximately 55 years old. It’s origins, however, go back many centuries and bears the influence of the cultures of China, Okinawa and Japan. Tang Soo Do training entails meditation, breathing exercises, punching, kicking, blocking, formal exercises ( hyung or kata ), breaking, sparring and physical conditioning. In addition to Tang Soo Do students at Central Maryland Martial Arts train in the Japanese discipline of Jujutsu. Jujutsu is a system of unarmed combat that stresses joint locks, joint manipulations, throws and take downs, including grappling. Although students are encouraged to participate in some tournaments as part of their overall development, Central Maryland Martial Arts is not a competition or sport Karate based school, choosing instead to focus on the art of Tang Soo Do and it’s self-defense applications. Classes are conducted in the traditional manner. A serious and disciplined environment is maintained in the studio. Emphasis is on respect, humility, focus and commitment. Classes are physical and active but also mentally challenging. Through commitment, sweat, trial and triumph students challenge and overcome their fears, expand their limits and create a positive framework for their lives. The pursuit is toward unity of mind, body and spirit. Ultimately, the goal for each student is to develop an "Indomitable Spirit". Rank progression at Central Maryland Martial Arts is based on a ten Gup system, with formal exams, held in front of a panel, at every other Gup. Rank promotions are based on time in grade, technical proficiency, mental focus, physical fitness and strength of spirit. Rank exams are progressively more challenging on all levels culminating with Black Belt testing, where candidates are expected to maintain a high level of performance, under extreme duress, over the course of a four or five hour examination. The average time from beginner to Cho Dan ( First Degree Black Belt ) is 4-1/2 years. Promotions are not automatic or guaranteed by enrollment. Rank progression is viewed in the context of a lifetime of study and not the momentary gratification of a colored belt. Time in grade is crucial at each level and emphasis is placed on the gradual, thorough and appropriate develpoment of each individual student.
