Detail: The art we practice is called Seidokan. It is a Shorin-ryu style of Okinawan Karate. Seidokan is a traditional complete self defense style incorporating punches, kicks, elbows, knees, toide (jujitsu-style throws and techniques) and weapons, which makes it great for self defense. It can resemble jujutsu in some aspects; however, the throwing and joint-locking techniques are more similar to Japanese aiki-jujutsu or Chinese Chin-Na. Traditional karate uses the external physical strength of the body when striking, kicking, and blocking. Although punching and kicking are an integral part of what we do, they are generally considered the ‘entry’ into a more complex and effective techniques. Endurance and coordination are benefits of becoming proficient with Karate techniques. In Jujutsu and Toide, instead of being tense the body is relaxed and kept in a natural position. Circular motions use an attacker's own aggression to defeat himself. Techniques include joint locks, pressure points, grappling, throwing and, falling. These are the most effective techniques against a large attacker. Wylie Karate teaches self-defense, as a form of discipline and art. Our students do not participate in any sport-karate competitions or fights. Our philosophy is that tournament fighting can promote aggression in confident children and ruin self esteem in shy and reserved children. The True Art of Karate was intended for self-defense not for fighting in tournaments.
